Week 15 at Whitney Young

This week was pretty nice, but also pretty stressful. I didn't have very much homework, but I had sooooo many tests/quizzes. I also had two swim meets this week and I was sore from hard practices that I endured from Monday-Wednesday. This week was also the last week of school in 2015 before break, so of course everyone was thinking about their two weeks off. I'm also happy to have almost no homework over break. That gives me more time to relax, rather than stress over how I'm going to get any projects done.

Week 14 at Whitney Young

This week was pretty streesful, but also pretty okay. This week was pretty average homework wise. And by average, I mean 2-3 hours a day. But, this week was one of the highest quiz taking weeks that I've ever experienced at Whitney Young. I had like 1-3 quizzes a day. As the week ended, the amount of quizzes per day increased. This week was also the week that I had science fair and an art field trip. Since, I had like 2 quizzes on the day of the field trip, I just decided to skip it to try and catch up. Because on Wednesday, I missed 2nd-6th period because of science fair. Anyways, this week was pretty okay I guess.

Week 13 at Whitney Young

This week was pretty hectic. I started my actual swim season this week, which sucked! I had morning practice on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:00 in the morning and then afternoon practice from 3:30-5:30 those same days. I also had a meet on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, we had a meet against a couple other schools, and we won! But, other than swimming, this week for actual school wasn't too bad. I had a lot of homework, but it wasn't too bad.

(I commented on Mackenzie B.'s blog from last week)

Week 12 at Whitney Young

This week was very short. We only had 2 actual days of school because of Thanksgiving break. This week was also the start of the Boy's Swimming & Diving Team. We started practice Monday and we have a meet next Friday. Other than that, this week was pretty okay. Next week will be way harder though.

Pixton Cartoon

My cartoon was based off of Chapter 4, pages 105-106, of the book Black Boy by Richard Wright. This scene is where Richard gets in trouble with his teacher and aunt, Aunt Addie, because his classmate left walnuts on the floor by Richard's desk. Aunt Addie, or Ms. Wilson, thinks that the walnuts are Richard's and she thinks he's lying about them not being his. She then beats Richard in front of the class because of the lies he supposedly told (even though the walnuts weren't his).

Week 11 at Whitney Young

This week has been pretty okay school wise. We got our first quarter report cards this week, and I finally got my geometry grade up from a C to an A! Now I can say with pride that I have gotten straight A's at Whitney Young on my report card. My grade may be a B now, but that A will always be special. Any who, this week was pretty average. Not too much homework. But, LOTS OF PROJECTS. Maybe the teachers don't want to give us projects over break, so they're just giving them all to us now. Who knows?? We also didn't have school Thursday. Apparently it's "No School November" because next week, we have Wednesday-Sunday off from school. Yay.

Week 10 at Whitney Young

This week was pretty rough. Even though there were only 3 full days of school this week, it as still pretty hard. Monday started off pretty nice. Note too much homework, but I had to start preparing for the many projects I had to do in the next couple of weeks. Tuesday was kind of bad. I got assigned so much homework to do and I wasn't in the mood to do any of it. I had no school Wednesday, so I spent most of the day doing homework that I didn't finish on Tuesday night. Swim practice that day was also pretty hard. Thursday had to be the worst day of the week for me. I was stressing out because I had a couple of tests to take, and Thursday was the last day of school before grades were due. I'm pretty sure that my geometry teacher won't manually override the grades for the first quarter report cards. So that means that I'll have a C on my report card for my geometry grade :(. But, on the bright side, I have a three day weekend that I'll probably be spending doing projects and homework. Whoopee.

Week 9 at Whitney Young

This week was one of the hardest and most stressful weeks that I've ever spent at Whitney Young. The week started off with 5:00 morning practice for the boys swim team. It was very hard and I was sore until Wednesday. This week I also had projects and/or essays due in English, World Studies, and Art. Homework was pretty high this week and I usually didn't get to sleep until about 10:45-11:00. I also have a swim meet Saturday and Sunday on top of the many hours of homework I was assigned today. What a week.

Week 8 at Whitney Young

This week was actually pretty okay. I didn't have too many quizzes this week, but I have a lot of projects this weekend. In gym, we had to go outside in the 40 degree weather in shorts and t-shirts, which wasn't very fun. In mandarin, I have like a million assignments due next week. In English, we had an essay due today. I think it was a pretty easy prompt to write off of. In world studies, she gave us one of the biggest projects that I'm pretty sure any of my classmates have ever received. In art, I have a finger print portrait due soon. Finally, in Geometry I passed some of my standards! I'm also doing better at understanding what I'm doing in the class. Also, boys high school swimming starts soon, and I'm planning on joining.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Essay

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Essay

Arnold Spirit is a Native American that lives on a reservation with his family members. His family is very poor and most people become alcoholics when they get older. Arnold’s father, in particular, is an alcoholic who will sometimes not come home for days because of his drinking problems. Arnold also was born with many birth defects. On the reservation, he was made fun of because of his big head, big feet and hands, skinny body, stutter, and lisp. He was often bullied at school and even belonged to the, “Black-Eye-of-the-Month-Club.” Arnold also draws cartoons to portray the emotions he feels since he thinks that “words are too limited” (pg.2-5). Finally, Arnold was convinced by his Geometry teacher, Mr. P, to leave the reservation to find hope; and he listened.
Arnold Spirit is an assimilationist who abandoned his people. Arnold left his reservation   to go to Reardan to find what Mr. P called, “hope.” He basically tried to make his life better in a place with no hopeless, thrown-in-the-towel, negative Native Americans that would most likely end up staying in the reservation for the rest of their lives. Arnold also admired the kids at his new school. On page 50-51 of the book, he describes the white kids at Reardan as magnificent, beautiful, smart, epic, and filled with hope. Arnold also had to travel over twenty miles to get to school. This is significant in justifying that he wanted to find hope out of the reservation so badly, that he’d go anywhere to get what he needs to become something better than most Native Americans became. Thus, proving that abandoning the reservation was the only way to not get mentally “killed” or become hopeless.
Arnold’s life at Reardan is significantly harder and more lonely than his life on the reservation. At home, Arnold would be surrounded by family members and friends that he had spent his whole life with. He had friends and family that made him laugh and enjoy being Native American. But, at Reardan, he was a social outcast. On page 83, it states that he had no friends, no one talked to him, no one sat at lunch with him, and no one barely even looked at him. He was basically invisible to his classmates, and that certainly must’ve made finding hope at his new school much harder. But, some might argue that when Arnold left the reservation, he could’ve been trying to find hope in himself so that he can bring hope to the reservation and end the stereotypes and hopelessness that surround the people he’s grown up with. But, leaving the reservation, abandoning the people he knows, and starting his life over would be the only way to bring up his community and bring hope to the reservation.

Week 7 at Whitney Young

This week surprisingly went by quite fast. But, this week was also a pretty hard week.  I had quite a lot of homework this week. Usually I only do homework until about 10:00 at the latest, but this week, some days I was up until about 10:30 doing homework. That was pretty stressful. I also had some pretty hard swim practices this week. That sucks because I have a swim meet this weekend and I'm swimming 6 events. I also didn't have very many tests this week. Only in Mandarin and Geometry. Hopefully next week will be even better than this one.

Week 6 at Whitney Young

This week went by really quickly. We only had two full days of school because of holidays and testing. Monday was Columbus Day; although I'd rather call it Indigenous Peoples Day. Tuesday was a full day of school, and it was pretty hectic. My teachers notified me about all of the tests and quizzes I had and I got really stressed out. Wednesday was PSAT testing for Sophomores and Juniors. All 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students didn't have to get to school until 12:00. So, I got to sleep in during the week, which rarely happens during the school year. Thursday was third Thursday, so we got out of school at 1:40. Friday was the second full day of school during this week. Friday was also pretty hectic because I had to take a couple of tests that could really make or break my grades. Overall, this week was pretty nice.

Week 5 at Whitney Young

This week was pretty long, but also pretty fun because this week was spirit week. Monday was pajama day. I wore red and black pajama pants and a black t-shirt with a grey sweater. Tuesday was twin day, and I twinned with my friend Kaela. Our outfits were mostly the same, but the sweatshirt I wore was blue and green while her sweatshirt was only green. Wednesday was way-back Wednesday. Unfortunately, this way the only day that I didn't have anything to bring. Thursday was class color day. The freshmen class color was green, and since my last name is green, I won candy in my World Studies class. Finally, Friday was Whitney Young color's day. I don't own very much orange, but I had a giant blue sweatshirt and blue shoes to help complement the orange bead necklace around my neck. This week was also pretty hard because I had around 8 quizzes to study for. Progress reports also come out next week, and I have all A's and a C in geometry (which is way higher than the F I had last week).

Week 4 at Whitney Young

This week was probably my first real taste of how the school year will be. I had about 5 quizzes and/or tests in some of my classes and have to deal with the same thing next week and possibly even the week after that. I've had a decent amount of homework to do this week. I only got about 2-3 hours a day, which is pretty nice. Any amount of homework is okay if I get to bed before 11 after doing it. My grades look pretty weird right now. Since I failed my first geometry quiz, and since that's the only grade in gradebook right now for geometry, I have all A's and an F in geometry. It kind of sucks because in class I'm doing well, but wasn't really prepared for the quiz. But, this week was overall pretty well.

Week 3 at whitney young

This week was pretty nice. It started out rough on Monday because on that day, I was notified that I had a couple quizzes and tests this week. But, throughout the week, I managed to evenly study and prepare for the quizzes and tests and hopefully did well on them. I think the hardest one had to be the geometry one. This was the first standards test I'd ever taken, and I think I did pretty well on it. I don't think that I've fully mastered it, but I have the opportunity to retake it, so it's fine. Homework has been pretty high this week and swim practice has been pretty stressful and difficult, but other than that, it was a pretty okay week.

Week 2 at Whitney Young

9/18/15
Period 4
My second week at Whitney Young wasn't too bad, but it wasn't too good either. Gym class was just like any ordinary gym class. Mandarin was a little fast paced this week, but I learned a lot. I got assigned my first paper of the school year in English. I spent a lot of time doing it, and it showed when it took Mr. Rehak a whole page of reading to find a grammar mistake. World studies was fine, not too much homework. Chemistry was pretty nice. I had 2 labs in one week, and got help from Ms. Rehak (coincidence?) with my science fair project. In art, the class worked with trees the entire week. We're no doing a final tree project. The worst part of my week though, had to be my geometry homework quiz that I failed. But, to shed light on this dark situation, no one in my period got over a 50%. I guess it just shows that I need to study my notes more to be better prepared for the next quiz we have (which might be Monday).

Neighborhood Paper

Today was the most stressful day ever. I received about three hours of homework from all of my teachers and was carrying two heavy bags around all day. I decided to skip swim practice because of the amount of work I got, and also because I knew that my swim practices started to get harder this week. So, I got onto the CTA bus across the street from Whitney Young Magnet High School and ventured home.
I must’ve been really worn out from my classes because I fell asleep on the bus. When I got up, I looked outside and saw very unusual houses and buildings. I missed my stop! As soon as I realized this, I pulled on the bus bell cord and got off of the bus. The street I was on was named “Jeffrey Boulevard.” It ran along another street named “South Chicago” and was right across the street from a KFC. I was definitely lost and had no clue where I was and how the bus got here. It was about four o’clock, and the next bus didn’t come for another twenty minutes, so I started to walk along East 83rd street.
The neighborhood I was lost in seemed very quiet and serene. Not very many people were around, but the people that were, were elderly citizens. Behind the KFC ran a very long street that went farther than I could see. Also, right behind the parking lot of the KFC was a barber shop.  I walked down East 83rd street to get a better view of it, and saw that the barber shop’s name was, “Deda’s Barber Shop.”  Inside there was a man in the chair lying almost with his back to the floor while the barber cut his hair. I thought that was strange and noticed that it would be very difficult to cut someone’s hair when he’s basically lying in bed.
Across the street from the barbershop was a small, colorful building that’s sign read, “Passing Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church.” That’s a long name for such a small building and would probably be very hard to remember. Alongside the church were two colorful, two floored homes; one with a person sitting outside. There were also four bright red houses lined up next to each other on a small block next to the barber shop. There were lots of houses made of brick which suggested that they were probably older houses that were made as a result of the Chicago fire, or just designed that way to keep the chances of fires spreading lower.
After making this inference, I crossed onto an even smaller block with a daycare center on it. The daycare center was named, “A Child’s World Early Learning Center,” and it had paintings along all of the walls and a painting of black children holding the world on the front, next to the doors. I was surprised at the lack of cars in front of the daycare center; maybe they were all out celebrating Rosh Hashanah.
I then crossed the street onto Paxton Avenue and saw many houses with enormous gardens around the gates and pine and evergreen trees lined up and down the block in front of each house. The trees were trimmed and looked very well kept, which gave the neighborhood an organized feel to it. Farther down Paxton Avenue, along the sidewalks that ran past the alleys, was a sign that read, “E to lakefront.” This showed me that if I walked down this street for about an hour, I’d probably either be at the lakefront, or still walking down the street.  These two choices gave me the option of either calling my mom to get her to pick me up, or keep exploring a place that I’d never been to before and could possibly see in the future. Knowing me, you would probably assume that I’d choose answer choice B, but eventually choose A because I can’t teleport home.  So, I kept walking down East 83rd street hoping to find something worth the time that I sacrificed for “exploring.”
On both sides of the streets I ventured onto were small, colorful businesses that bring out the economic and social view of the community. There were all types of stores to go into and buy random stuff that you most likely need or have at home.  On the corner of 83rd and Luella was a corner store that fit that description. Also, since I was getting pretty hungry, it seemed like the perfect place to stop and get a bite to eat. As soon as I walked inside of the store, I saw rows and rows of chips such as Doritos, Cheetos, and Fritos, candy that ranged from Jolly Ranchers to Snickers and drinks that ranged from Gatorade to Snapple. There were also many eating utensils and random products such as tissue, plates, cups, and syrup. The counter at the front of the store had many beauty products such as hair shampoo, lotion, and hair brushes.  There was so much to choose from, and I didn’t have much time to stand around and look, so I got a bottle of water and a bag of Grandma’s cookies and made my way out of the store.  I’d also noticed that the store was very colorful, and certainly attracted me because of the vibe it gave off when I looked at it.
Right across the street from the store was another small church named, “King of Greater Glory Tabernacle Church.” I remember wondering if they were an Eastern Orthodox Church, Protestant, or Roman Catholic Church. The church had a very well put together garden and also a cool ramp that led to the colorful, see through doors. The stain glass on the outside of the church was delightful and made me wonder what it looked like in the inside when light shined on it.  The houses next door to the church also had a very delightful and pleasant color scheme amongst themselves. They all also coincidentally had a double triangle roof with a pretty garden in front. This block’s street name was 83rd and Ogelsby, and it was highlighted by the block club sign on the corner.
The time was now about four twenty and I started to come to the conclusion that the neighborhood was full of old, organized, well kept people that liked their houses to look nice. Because of this conclusion, I felt it would be appropriate to stop at the next block instead of wandering around for another thirty minutes. I approached 2400 East Yates Boulevard with a small smile on my face. I’d reached my most favorite part of any neighborhood I’ve ever been to; the park. The park, to my advantage, had a giant football field named, “Eckersall Football Stadium,” that took up half of the block. The stadium was surrounded by gates and had two twenty-five row sitting areas. The stadium also had football players practicing in it, so I decided to call my mom and ask her to pick me up while I watched the players practice. My little thirty minute adventure into the South-East part of Chicago was well worth it.

First Week at Whitney Young

My first week at Whitney Young was way harder than I expected it to be.  I wasn't expecting over 2 hours of homework on the first 4 days of school, and certainly wasn't used to not getting 8+ hours of sleep every night. I guess that's just something that every student has to get used to/adapt to. I hope I catch on soon and become accustomed to this new work load and sleep schedule.
